The Preventive Care Benefits Available Under The Affordable Care Act

Preventive care, one of the ten essential benefits of all individual and small business plans available after January 1st, 2014, provides all adults and children with services such as screenings, immunizations, drug and alcohol counseling, and many others.

These benefits differ slightly from some others, in that the must be obtained within the network selected by your plan provider, however, they do not require you to pay a copayment or coinsurance, even if you haven't reached your plan's deductible.

For all adults, the benefits include:

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm one-time screening for men of specified ages who have ever smoked

Alcohol Misuse screening and counseling

Aspirin use to prevent cardiovascular disease for men and women of certain ages

Blood Pressure screening for all adults

Cholesterol screening for adults of certain ages or at higher risk

Special benefits for women include:

Anemia screening on a routine basis for pregnant women

Breast Cancer Genetic Test Counseling (BRCA) for women at higher risk for breast cancer

Breast Cancer Mammography screenings every 1 to 2 years for women over 40

Breast Cancer Chemoprevention counseling for women at higher risk

Breastfeeding comprehensive support and counseling from trained providers, and access to breastfeeding supplies, for pregnant and nursing women

Benefits for children include:

Autism screening for children at 18 and 24 months

Depression screening for adolescents

Fluoride Chemoprevention supplements for children without fluoride in their water source

Hearing screening for all newborns

Immunization vaccines for children from birth to age 18
